For years, smoking sat atop the CDC’s list of top preventable causes of death in the United States. However, research in a 2017 study by the Cleveland Clinic and New York University School of Medicine found that obesity resulted in 47 percent more life-years lost than tobacco.

 

Other leading causes of preventable death, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, were found to also be less deadly than obesity. Glen Taksler of the Cleveland Clinic, who was the lead author of the study, commented that, “These preliminary results continue to highlight the importance of weight loss, diabetes management and healthy eating in the U.S.”

 

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that nearly 40% of US adults are affected by obesity. A 2015 study by Lin Yang, Ph.D. determined that more Americans are obese than simply overweight.

 

Dr. Amar Chadaga of the Advocate for Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois believes that certain foods like carbohydrates put you at a greater risk for weight gain because they have shown to cause the same addictive brain activity as tobacco consumption.
